You don’t need to be discouraged if you don’t fit the “typical model” specifications. That is, over 5′7″ tall, thin, and have incredible bone structure. You should note that there are different categories of modeling, contrary to popular belief that fashion models are the only types of “real” models. There are so many different types of models in the industry that if you are seriously interested in modeling, there just might be a type of modeling that would suit you perfectly.
Fashion Models
Fashion models do typically need to be taller than 5′7″, especially in fashion shows. Models need to have basically the same measurements so that they can fit the client’s requested clothing. There are plus-size fashion models, however they also need to be tall in this type of modeling.
Glamour Models
This type of modeling focuses more on the model, rather than trying to sell clothing or a product. The model’s sexuality and allure are most important in glamour modeling. The photos taken will enhance the model’s best feature, and typically only professional models are used for these types of shots. Glamour shots are often used for calendars and men’s magazines. Petite models are usually welcomed into this category of modeling because glamour models are photographed, so you won’t know their true height.
Fitness Models
Fintness modeling is perfect for anyone who has an amazing body. This means, they should have lots of muscles to show off and be very physically fit. Shorter models can fit into this category if they have amazing muscles to display.
Bikini Models
Although the name sounds quite provocative, bikini modeling is simply modeling swim wear. You need to have an amazing body that looks good in any swim suit. Photos can be used for mens magazines or calendars, but can also be used to advertise swimwear.
Fine Art Models
Fine art modeling is quite risque. Nudity is very often involved, but is done in a classy and artistic manner. The final product of these photos will be very artsy or unusual.
Body Part Models
You may have heard the term, “hand model”, and there is indeed such a thing. If you have really beautiful hands, slender fingers, perfect skin, and a perfect manicure, you may be able to find work as a hand model. The same goes for other body parts. A great pair of legs would be ideal for a client’s hair removal advertisement. Someone with perfect teeth would be a client’s ideal model for a dental product, where they would photograph only their smile.
As you can see, there are so many different types of modeling. It is best to figure out your best qualities and what you enjoy doing the most. Once you’ve decided, you can enhance your portfolio to show clients which type of modeling you’re best at.
