Finding the Right Teen Model Agency

There are many modeling agencies which accept teen models. Many teen modeling agencies are not totally legitimate. There are reasons why these modeling agencies are not widely accepted by the modeling industry and the fashion industry either. These agencies call teen girls or send out fliers to the girls and the agencies try to get the teens to attend a ‘free’ screening or audition for the agency. These questionable agencies then try to sell the teen’s parents and the teen photo portfolios and modeling classes etc. This is why these agencies are questionable.

If a representative from an agency wants a teen to model for them, the reputable agencies will not charge the teen or his or her parents a dime. The reputable agencies know that any money spent on photo portfolios or other photos will be made back in the fees charged to the companies needing the models. A modeling agency’s job is to find work for models. Reputable agencies want to gain models who are going to be able to work and make money for the agency. The agency wants models it is going to be able to get work for.

Some of these questionable agencies are in the business mostly of selling photo portfolios and classes. Most of the models who are photographed, sold portfolios and sold these classes by these questionable agencies are not really going to ever be a model. These agencies feel they can make more money by charging for classes and photo layouts, photographers and portfolios. Some of these questionable agencies do get one or two models who do make it, but, that is not how a majority of questionable modeling agencies make most of their money. These agencies many times state in their ads that “we cannot guarantee that you will be a successful model or actress.”

While no modeling agency can guarantee what the fashion industry will want next season, if they are a reputable agency and believe they can get work for a model, they will pay for all photo shoots and all portfolios and additional training for the teen model, as well as adult models. Since the modeling agency knows it will receive any money put into a model back, when the agency gets paid for the model’s jobs. This applies weather it is a runway model or an in-store model or a magazine model or a television model or an acting position. Reputable agencies know which type of models do well and which do not. If an agency representative tells the proposed model that he or she is just right for modeling, the first question which should be asked by the teen or his or her parents is: “How much money is this going to cost?” If the answer is “not a dime,” This is probably a reputable agency, and the agency believes it can get modeling jobs for this model.

Different agencies have different benefits and usually, each has ups and downs. If a teen signs with a particular agency, the agency should never ask for air fare or portfolio charges up front, before the teen is working. Most reputable agencies will instead take anything that is initially charged for out of paychecks a little at a time while a teen works. Most agencies do not charge for these things at all. If an agency is small may be the only legitimate reason for a company to charge for minimal things. A second question might be, “do I have to pay for anything once beginning to work?” This may be a reason to work for a more established agency, after all, more established agencies have been in the business of getting jobs for models for many years and will be able to get more work for a model, than a newer agency. Be sure to check with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) in the town or city where an agency is located. This may be able to give some sort of clue if an agency is legitimate or a ‘fly by night agency.’

Some of the known legitimate teen model agency which get teens real work which may lead to an adult modeling career are listed as follows:

Elite Model Management- http://www.elitemodel.com (One of the top agencies in modeling industry today.)

Ford Models- http://www.fordmodels.com (Holds many model searches.)

Model One- http://www.models1.co.uk (Most popular agency in Europe.)

Trump Models- http://www.trumpmodels.com (Miss USA girls and owned by Donald Trump.)

Supreme Models- http://www.suprememanagement.com (Promotes ‘intelligent beauty.’)

W Model Management- http://www.wmodels.com (Offices all over US, only agency in Utah.)

APM Models- http://www.apmmodels.com (This teen model agency has strong personal relationships with it’s models.)

These agencies are not the only legitimate agencies, but just a few of the top agencies for teen models.

Teen Model Portfolio

With thousands of beautiful and talented models competing for the same jobs in the industry, you need a portfolio that stands out from the rest. A client is not going to choose an average girl with boring photos. They want variety, talent, and most of all, they want someone who stands out.

If you put yourself in the shoes of a client who sees the same boring pictures of women who are equally beautiful, day after day, wouldn’t you jump at the chance to hire someone who finally appeared unique?

Some of the key things to remember are, it doesn’t matter how pretty you know you are. No client will want to see photos that are blurry, are intercepted with objects and a lot of distractions, or drunken nights at the club – no matter what kind of gorgeous outfit you were wearing. Do not add these types of photos into your portfolio. If you want to take photos yourself, do not do so in a mirror. You should use a good quality digital camera rather than a cell phone camera. Clients feel that this distorts the model, and they can’t see how she truly looks. A digital camera with a timer would be ideal, so you can pose hands-free.

A horrible mistake most aspiring models make, is adding strange colors and effects to their photos. No client wants to see your graphic art skills. They want a face they can work with. A client would rather see your face totally bare, than to see your Photoshop effects. If you feel you must, just lightly adjust the brightness/contrast of your photos, and smooth any blemishes you have. Going overboard will make clients turn away.

You should ask whoever is photographing you to take a variety of shots in different locations, or with different backgrounds. You should never have more than two photos in your portfolio that look almost the same. A variety of color and black and white images is always recommended, but the more color, the better.

Never be afraid to ask for what you want with your photos. If you aren’t sure what poses look good on you, ask your photographer to guide you. Throw on a fan so your hair is flowing in some shots. Tell your photographer you want them to take a photo on the count of three as you jump and pose in mid-air. Put your head down and toss your hair back with your hands on your head, for a unique effect. Smile in some shots, laugh in others, or just give different expressions altogether. Trying creative poses like these will maximize the results you get and give you more knowledge of what works for you, or what to improve on.

Once you have a vast collection of photos, you should submit an online portfolio to big modeling sites like ModelMayhem.com, or even on your MySpace or Facebook page for maximum exposure. Following these guidelines in building the perfect portfolio will help you race ahead as a top teen model and you will easily beat other models competing for the same jobs as you.

Teen Model Search

How to determine scams from legitmate teen modeling searches

Everyone secretly dreams of being a model at least once in their life, right? Why not you? You could be the next high paid model by just being in the right place at the right time. But who has time to wait around forever to be discovered? Take the initiative and put yourself out there for the biggest names in talent to find you a bit easier.

The first step in getting discovered is finding your niche. Are you sporty and in great shape? Tall and slim with legs that go on forever? Curvy with excellent proportions? Or petite with a more “all-american” look? All of these areas in modeling exist and many, many more.

Use the newspaper, internet, and word of mouth to find modeling searches in your area.

Don’t fall prey to scams. This is the ugly side of the modeling world. Many modeling and talent searches end in heartbreak when young hopefuls learn that they paid big bucks for nothing more than a seminar. Here are some tips to help you look out for would-be scams:

Do not ever pay up front for any kind of modeling and talent search. Good agencies do not ask for money, their search for talent is free.

Never be talked in to paying for professional photography. A simple search of the biggest names in model management will show that they only require a few snapshots, no professional shots.

Be wary of fashion shows that are many months in advance and require you to pay for runway coaching in advance. By the time of the runway show, the company may have already packed up and left town.

Use common sense. Don’t look past something that your gut tells you is wrong, just because you’re eager to get into the business.

Now, the best way to find a modeling and talent search is to search for local and more mainstream modeling management agencies. They will often have a contact section where a list of upcoming casting calls will be posted. These are the most legitimate ways to get noticed. In this business, you have to learn how to take rejection. Just because one company does not have a space for you, does not mean you should give up. More often than not, these agencies will tell you what you’re doing wrong and give you advice for further casting calls. Take their critiques in stride, afterall, the name of the game is persistence.

Keep going to casting calls, and above all else, be confident. You’re selling your image and you want that image to be professional, personable, sociable, and confident.

You don’t need to be discouraged if you don’t fit the “typical model” specifications. That is, over 5’7″ tall, thin, and have incredible bone structure. You should note that there are different categories of modeling, contrary to popular belief that fashion models are the only types of “real” models. There are so many different types of models in the industry that if you are seriously interested in modeling, there just might be a type of modeling that would suit you perfectly.

Fashion Models

Fashion models do typically need to be taller than 5’7″, especially in fashion shows. Models need to have basically the same measurements so that they can fit the client’s requested clothing. There are plus-size fashion models, however they also need to be tall in this type of modeling.

Glamour Models

This type of modeling focuses more on the model, rather than trying to sell clothing or a product. The model’s sexuality and allure are most important in glamour modeling. The photos taken will enhance the model’s best feature, and typically only professional models are used for these types of shots. Glamour shots are often used for calendars and men’s magazines. The biggest area for a teen model is as one of the petite models as they are usually welcomed into this category of modeling because glamour models are photographed, so you won’t know their true height.

Fitness Models

Fintness modeling is perfect for anyone who has an amazing body. This means, they should have lots of muscles to show off and be very physically fit. Shorter models can fit into this category if they have amazing muscles to display.

Bikini Models

Although the name sounds quite provocative, bikini modeling is simply modeling swim wear. You need to have an amazing body that looks good in any swim suit. Photos can be used for mens magazines or calendars, but can also be used to advertise swimwear.

Fine Art Models

Fine art modeling is quite risque. Nudity is very often involved, but is done in a classy and artistic manner. The final product of these photos will be very artsy or unusual.

Body Part Models

You may have heard the term, “hand model”, and there is indeed such a thing. If you have really beautiful hands, slender fingers, perfect skin, and a perfect manicure, you may be able to find work as a hand model. The same goes for other body parts. A great pair of legs would be ideal for a client’s hair removal advertisement. Someone with perfect teeth would be a client’s ideal model for a dental product, where they would photograph only their smile.

As you can see, there are so many different types of modeling and ways to be a teen model. It is best to figure out your best qualities and what you enjoy doing the most. Once you’ve decided, you can enhance your portfolio to show clients which type of modeling you’re best at.
